In Memory

This page is dedicated to the late Wayne Roscherr, who was the co-founder of Rough and Tumble (RAT).

Wayne was born in South Africa, but lived in Zimbabwe for the first years of his life. At the age of eight his family returned to South Africa where he remained until he passed away from Huntington's Disease.

Wayne started his training in Judo while still very young. He achieved the grades of 4th Dan in Judo and 4th Dan in an eclectic style of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, even though he was suffering with a terminal illness. He also achieved the grade of brown belt in Karate.

Wayne was a true martial artist and lived life like every day was his last. Amongst his many achievements, he saw active service in the South African border war, where he used his martial arts training and also fought in the South African Defence Force Judo team.

Wayne, together with Pierre Botha and later Robbie Jordaan, ran the Kiora Judo and Jiu-Jitsu club for many years until he was no longer able to perform the club duties due to his illness.

Wayne is one of the few people I know who has successfully defended himself against two armed attackers, one with a gun and the other with a knife and emerging completely unscathed. This was a person who lived life to the very fullest without fear and looked forward to each new challenge, but always remained humble and treated everyone with respect. Wayne added much to the open and humble approach of RAT traditions.

Wayne successfully completed the gruelling Comrades Marathon running race (89km) four times, even when he struggled to walk with his illness. Wayne passed away with Huntington's Disease in his early 40's, the same disease that had claimed his father's life when he was a young boy. Even though Wayne passed away very young, he had by that time more than 30 years active training in martial arts.

Thanks Wayne for yor contribution to our lives and to RAT.
