The Founders

Two people are responsible for the initial development of RAT.

Steven Yates began developing the foundations to the RAT approach during his national military service, where he realised that soldiers needed a combat system that was effective in the real world and not one that is just theoretically or philosophically based.

The late Wayne Roscherr was the co-founder of RAT in the early 1990's. He played a significant role in the development of the first formalised RAT syllabus, which was used to teach over a 1000 students, amongst them members of a Special Forces regiment, naval armaments security personnel, VIP protection members, policemen, door men, and numerous civilian members who have been successful in competitions of all types.

Wayne was the owner of Kiora Judo and Jiu-Jitsu Kwai on the Bluff and also Steven's instructor in an eclectic system of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo. Both Wayne and Steven have trained in and are qualified instructors in various martial arts disciplines.

Wayne will be sorely missed not only as one of the founding members of RAT, but because of his great and humble personality and unwavering persistence. Please read In Memory, which is a tribute page to Wayne.

RAT has undergone a rework to its syllabus, and is now in its third iteration.
