Kiora Club

The Kiora club is probably one of the oldest judo clubs in South Africa. The name “Kiora” means the “little one”, which is quite befitting, as the club started in a little garage on the Bluff, Durban, South Africa (circa 1940s). Judo has remained the main martial art practised at Kiora over the years and still has a very strong following to this day with owners changing hands several times since Wayne Roscherr passed away and Pierre Botha was no longer involved. The club even has a road named after it on the Bluff.

Wayne and Pierre introduced Jiu-Jitsu into the club and many years later Ian Souch and I introduced the Chinese martial arts into the club. Later full contact combat Tae Kwon Do was introduced by Mok Yu Tuen in the 1990’s. With the passing of Wayne the Judo, Jiu Jitsu and Kung Fun sections split and were managed independently. The Kiora Kung Fu and Jiu Jitsu syllabi are now only offered to past students. Our focus is now mainly on promoting RAT and other online courses.
